Puzzle Bobble

Puzzle Bobble is a classic arcade game developed by Taito Corporation released in 1994. With a genre of puzzle game, the player should think carefully and make good decisions in order to finish the game.

Interactivity

This game provides a pointer for the player used to aims and fires bubbles upwards. The colour of the bubble to be fired is generated randomly. However, the game will provide the colour of the next bubble every time the player fires a bubble. Moreover, every fired bubble will travel in the straight line from the pointer and will end up in touching another bubble on the screen or the top of the screen. Otherwise, the fired bubble bounces off when it hits one of the side wall on the screen.

Concept

Every time the player start the game, there is a playing box contains a random sets of coloured balls which supposed to be bubbles. At the bottom of the screen, there is a pointer for the player to fire bubble. Similar with other arcade games, scoring system is also included in this game which leads experienced players to acquire score as high as possible. If the player hits two or more bubbles with the same colour, it will popped up and gives 10 points each. However, if the player popped these bubbles with another pair of bubbles hanging from popped bubbles (as known as dropped bubbles), the score given to the player will be bigger. One dropped bubble scores 20, two scores 40, three scores 80. Therefore, the score is doubled for every bubble dropped. Bonus points can also be awarded to the player if a round cleared in 5 seconds or less.

Settings

The player can also play two player mode which enables the player to compete with another person. Furthermore, the difficulty of the game increases every time the player cleared the arena by creating a new pattern of bubbles.

Game Design Workshop - Week 3

This week challenge is taken from Brenda Brathwaite's blog.

In summary, this challenge gives the easiest way to design a game. From the instructions given, it tells us to create a race game. Basically, player(s) begin at a point (start point), and should reach the end point (goal point).

Rad Racer

Because my group members only had a digital dimensional dices, and were provided a paper with a honeycomb pattern, we made a race board game. It is obvious that honeycomb looks like hexagon which has 6 sides. Therefore, my team decided to use only 6-dimensional dice.

After brainstorming for a while, we come up with an idea in which the player(s) started from the bottom of the paper, and should reach the top of the paper.

Game's Map

For the movement, we decided to use 3 of the upper hexagon's edges since the remaining edges leads to backward movement. By using 6-dimensional dice, the number's given to the player will move him/ her as follows:

Player's Movement

Moreover, every player's movement will leave its previous trace(s). Therefore, the player has a head and a tail which is similar with a snake game.

There are only two rules on this game, consists of:
1. If the player's head hits other player's head, the other player's head must be moved to the start point.
Player 2 hits Player 1's head, which leads Player 1's head back to the start point

2. If the player's head hits other player's tail, the player cannot move to its place. However, the player can leap other player's tail by having double movement (dice number: 4,5,6).

Player 1 leaps Player 2's tail by having dice number 6

3. If the player's head is on the left/ right edge of the game's map, half of its head is placed on its current position, while the other half is placed on the other edge. Therefore, the player's next movement will either go on the left edge, or the right edge of the game's map.

To make the game more challenging, there are several items spread randomly within the game's blocks. These items can give either advantages or disadvantages to the player which step on the item's block.

Kirby's Adventure

Kirby's Adventure is a NES game developed by HAL Laboratory released in 1993. This game is a platform game which makes the player to jump his/ her avatar to and from suspended platforms and/or over obstacles in order to continue the game.

Interactivity

Every game must be interactive to play in order to attract people play its game. In this case, Kirby's Adventure provides many actions for the player. By pressing left or right keys twice, the player's avatar will dash to the desired location. Moreover, the avatar will slide down to a given direction by pressing 'A' button and down key. If the player press up key, the avatar will fly over stuff! Furthermore, the avatar will inhale enemies in front of it when the player pressed 'B' button. The avatar can also take various enemy's power within the game by pressing down while inhaled an enemy.

Settings

There is no settings in this game for the player to choose difficulty, single or multi player game. However, the player can choose his/ her saved game from the main menu of the game. If there is no saved slot, the player must choose any of the three slots available. By doing this, the player will start a new game and the game will be automatically saved after each level passed.

Concept

The game consists of several worlds, which contains either regular level, boss fight, or world to world warp star door. Sometimes, the player may be given mini-game which provide benefits to its avatar such as health items, or certain powers. During the game, the player may attack enemies and have to proceed to the end of level until the final level of the game.

Goal

The objective of this game is to complete all levels given. Optionally, the player could acquire score as high as possible, and complete all the mini-games.

Challenge

By watching the introduction tutorial from the start of the game, it can be predictable that the game will have a long story to finish the game. The player must reach the end of each level without being killed by enemies. When the character almost reach the end of the level, it will be given a boss which must be killed to finish the level. Since the story is a bit too long, the developer of this game gives health bar and life's token which can be increased. Therefore, the player's avatar will not be easily killed by the enemies yet the player still have to complete every level within the game.

Story

After Kirby wakes up from his after-lunch nap without having any dreams, he goes to the Fountain of Dreams to investigate. In doing so, he discovers that King Dedede has stolen the Star Rod, the source of power to the Fountain of Dreams, and broken it into seven pieces, giving six fragments to his allies, Whispy Woods, Paint Roller, Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright, Kracko, Heavy Mole, and Meta Knight, also keeping one for himself. Without the Star Rod, all of the inhabitants of Dream Land are becoming restless and unable to dream. Kirby decides to track down the fragments of the Star Rod and bring them back to the Fountain of Dreams in order to restore everyone's dreams. (Wikipedia, 2013)
